Prekindergarten, Qualifications, &
Selection
May 2004
To ensure student success in reading, the Florida Reading
Association members request that legislators, district School Board members and
superintendents support and fund:
- Educational programs for four-year-olds that contain
strong literacy components with oversight by the Florida Department of
Education. Universal prekindergarten will require the development of a
research based and age-appropriate curriculum that aligns with the established
state standards-based K-12 curriculum. Successful implementation of universal
prekindergarten will occur only with qualified instructors who have received
training in current best practices for reading instruction
- A qualified literacy leader in each school who supports
classroom teachers
- A
wide selection of children's books for every elementary, middle and high
school classroom and media center in Florida.
